Land Inequality in Rural India: World Inequality Database Report 2026

Rural Land Inequality: A Deep Dive into India’s Distribution Gaps

A recent research paper published by the World Inequality Database (WID) has highlighted severe land inequality in rural India. Using data from the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011, covering over 2.7 lakh villages, the study reveals that land distribution remains highly concentrated despite decades of land reforms.

Key Statistical Insights

  • Landlessness: Approximately 46% of rural households in India are landless, indicating a massive disparity in resource access.

  • Gini Index: The Gini index for land inequality in India stands at a high 71 (on a scale of 0 to 100), where 100 represents absolute inequality.

  • Concentration of Ownership: The top 10% of households own about 44% of the land, while the top 1% alone controls 18% of the total land area.

Social and Historical Drivers

The report identifies that areas previously under colonial landlord systems (like the Zamindari system) exhibit higher land concentration today. Furthermore, social marginalization plays a significant role, with Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) facing significantly higher rates of landlessness. For TNPSC and Civil Services aspirants, this is a critical topic under "Socio-Economic Issues" and "Land Reforms in India."
