A global analysis published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health has presented maternal mortality figures for 2023. India recorded roughly 24,700 maternal deaths that year, among the highest counts in South Asia. The study draws on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 dataset covering 204 countries. Worldwide, about 2.4 lakh maternal deaths occurred, and the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) was 190.5 per lakh live births. Although maternal deaths have fallen since 1990, the pace of improvement has slowed recently. Maternal haemorrhage and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are the leading causes.
