Kerala has launched the Elder-Friendly Office Certification (EFOC) scheme to judge whether public offices and institutions are accessible and convenient for senior citizens. It is India's first government certification of its kind, assessing physical access, service delivery, staff conduct, communication and senior-citizen participation. Step-free access, a ground-floor toilet, a priority queue and a designated officer are mandatory. A six-month pilot will cover 14 offices, one per district, before expanding to village, taluk and other offices. Kerala, India's fastest-ageing State, had about 16.5% of people above 60 in 2021, projected to reach 20.9% by 2031.
