Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: UDF Wins Majority; No Indian State Now Under Left Rule

Save
In the Kerala Assembly Elections 2026, the United Democratic Front (UDF) won about 97-98 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 71 in the 140-member House. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Pinarayi Vijayan of the CPI(M) and in power since 2016, was reduced to around 35 seats. With this verdict, no Indian state is ruled by Left parties, ending a run of nearly 50 years since 1977 in which at least one state had a Left government. Kerala had elected the world's first democratically chosen communist government in 1957 under E.M.S. Namboodiripad. Left influence had earlier ended in West Bengal (2011) and Tripura (2018).
