The Karnataka Cabinet cleared the use of ballot papers and ballot boxes instead of Electronic Voting Machines for the panchayat polls due in February 2026. To give this legal backing, the government plans to bring the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Local body elections are conducted by the State Election Commission, and EVMs are not constitutionally compulsory for such polls.
