Lakkundi in Karnataka's Gadag district will be surveyed with modern technology to locate monuments buried or hidden under vegetation. The State Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage (DAMH) signed an MoU with the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru. Tools include LiDAR, GIS, remote sensing, Ground Penetrating Radar, drone surveys and photogrammetry. Lakkundi flourished as an urban centre under the Kalyana Chalukyas in the 10th-12th centuries CE, and its temples follow the Vesara style blending Nagara, Dravida and Bhumija elements. Karnataka is preparing a DPR to seek a UNESCO Tentative List place.
