INS Sunayna Deployed for IOS SAGAR 2026: Enhancing Indian Ocean Security

IOS SAGAR 2026: INS Sunayna Embarks on a Multinational Maritime Mission

In a significant move to reinforce India’s commitment to regional security and the "Neighbourhood First" policy, the Indian Navy has deployed INS Sunayna as the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) under the 2026 edition of the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) mission. This deployment is a practical expression of India's MAHASAGAR vision—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

Strategic Context and Objectives

The mission was ceremonially flagged off from Mumbai on April 2, 2026, by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth. The deployment comes at a critical time when West Asia is facing heightened tensions, leading to potential disruptions in vital global sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz. The mission’s core objectives include:

  • Multilateral Cooperation: Promoting maritime safety and freedom of navigation through joint engagements.
  • Inclusivity: Personnel from 16 friendly foreign countries (FFCs) are embarked on the ship, making it a "floating training platform" for regional navies.
  • Regional Stability: Addressing non-traditional threats like piracy, narco-trafficking, and IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing.

Mission Phases and Port Calls

The IOS SAGAR initiative is divided into two comprehensive phases:

  • Harbour Phase (March 16-29, 2026): Conducted at Kochi, focusing on professional exchanges and technical training.
  • Sea Phase (April 2 – May 20, 2026): An operational deployment across the South-Eastern Indian Ocean Region.

During this 50-day voyage, INS Sunayna will visit strategic ports including Colombo (Sri Lanka), Male (Maldives), Jakarta (Indonesia), Singapore, Phuket (Thailand), Chittagong (Bangladesh), and Yangon (Myanmar), before concluding the mission at its home port in Kochi.

Capacity Building and Training

The multinational crew will undergo rigorous training in essential maritime domains, including:

  • Advanced Seamanship and Navigation: Enhancing bridgemanship and tactical maneuvering.
  • Safety Operations: Specialized drills in firefighting and damage control.
  • Operational Readiness: Practical training in Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations to counter asymmetric threats.

For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, this mission is a vital current affairs update under "Defence and International Relations," highlighting India’s evolving role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.
