INS Sudarshini’s Historic Maiden Visit to Las Palmas: A Milestone in Lokayan 26
INS Sudarshini: Strengthening Maritime Diplomacy in the Atlantic
In a historic first for the Indian Navy, the sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at Las Palmas, Canary Islands (Spain), on April 23, 2026. This landmark visit marks the first time an Indian naval vessel has reached the Spanish archipelago, representing a significant expansion of India's maritime outreach in the Atlantic region.
Lokayan 26: A 10-Month Transoceanic Odyssey
The visit is a pivotal part of the 'Lokayan 26' expedition, which was flagged off from Kochi on January 20, 2026. The 10-month-long voyage, themed around 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The World is One Family), aims to cover 22,000 nautical miles, visiting 18 ports across 13 countries.
Objectives and Outreach
As a sail training platform commissioned in 2012, INS Sudarshini serves multiple strategic purposes during this deployment:
- Cadet Training: Providing hands-on experience to over 200 Indian Navy and Coast Guard trainees in traditional seamanship, navigation, and sail handling.
- Diplomatic Engagement: The port call included professional interactions with Spanish naval authorities and cultural exchanges.
- Soft Power: Strengthening people-to-people ties through outreach activities for the local Spanish community and the Indian diaspora in Las Palmas.
Future Milestones
Following the Canary Islands stopover, the ship proceeded to Mindelo, Cape Verde, before embarking on its long trans-Atlantic passage to participate in the SAIL 250 commemorative events in the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence.
For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, this event is a key update under "National Defence" and "International Relations," showcasing the Indian Navy's role as a net security provider and a messenger of global peace.
