India has opened its first barrier-free Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll plaza on National Highway 48 in Gujarat. Under MLFF tolling, vehicles do not have to stop at a boom barrier; the toll is collected electronically as they pass at normal speed, cutting queues, fuel waste and travel time. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to extend barrier-free tolling to all four-lane highways by 2029. The system is a step towards a fully electronic, seamless highway tolling network across the country.
