The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha to replace the ISI Act, 1959 and restructure its governance. ISI was founded by P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata in 1931 and declared an Institution of National Importance under the 1959 Act.
The Bill converts ISI from a society into a statutory body corporate with an 11-member Board of Governors as the main policy body. The President will be the Visitor and an Academic Council will handle courses and examinations. ISI has centres in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Tezpur.
