A team of Indian-led astronomers has identified eRASSU J060839.5–704014 (eRASSU J0608), a pair of white dwarfs that orbit each other in about 6.2 minutes. It is an ultracompact double-white-dwarf binary whose orbit is shrinking at about 4.7 × 10⁻¹¹ seconds per second. Material from one star may strike the other directly through direct-impact accretion, producing strong X-rays. White dwarfs are dense remnants of Sun-like stars. Data from NASA's NICER, the Einstein Probe and ESA's XMM-Newton over about 3.5 years were used.
