India finalises first uniform national standards for mortuary and post-mortem infrastructure

Save
India has put in place its first uniform national standards for mortuaries and post-mortem facilities. They were issued under the Clinical Establishments Act through the National Council for Clinical Establishments, which works under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Mortuaries must be on the ground floor, away from hospital waste zones, with separate entrances for moving bodies. Cold storage must be kept at 4°C to 8°C, hold at least four bodies and use unique serial numbers for identification. Bodies in medico-legal cases must be kept apart from other remains.
