India has begun evaluating all 1,211 regularly occurring bird species, under the IUCN framework. The work is led by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), the IUCN SSC Center for Species Survival India–Wildlife Trust of India and the State of India's Birds initiative. By 19 October 2026, preliminary assessments of 107 species were done; all species should be covered by end-2026, with final results due by end-2027. Early proposals list the Great Indian Bustard as Critically Endangered, the Marbled Duck as Endangered and the Sarus Crane as Vulnerable, though these are not final. India's National Red List Roadmap and Vision 2025–2030 targets over 11,000 species by 2030.
