India Ranks 3rd Globally in Renewable Energy Capacity: A 250 GW Milestone

Global Leadership: India Secures 3rd Rank in Renewable Energy Capacity

In a major testament to its green energy transition, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has ranked India 3rd globally in total renewable energy capacity for the year 2025. This achievement underscores India's aggressive pursuit of sustainable development and its role as a key player in the global climate action landscape.

The 250 GW Milestone

India’s renewable sector has witnessed an unprecedented surge, reaching a total installed capacity of 250.5 GW. The most remarkable aspect of this growth is the record-breaking addition of approximately 45 GW within a single calendar year.

Sectoral Breakdown of Growth

The surge is primarily driven by the massive expansion of solar and wind infrastructure:

  • Solar Energy: The undisputed leader in the mix, contributing a staggering 37 GW to the annual addition. This highlights the success of various government schemes like PM-KUSUM and the PLI scheme for high-efficiency modules.
  • Wind Energy: The sector showed steady progress with an addition of 6.3 GW, supported by offshore wind policies and repowering initiatives.
  • Hydropower & Others: Incremental growth in large hydropower projects and biomass has further bolstered the national grid's green credentials.

Road to 500 GW by 2030

This rapid expansion aligns perfectly with India's ambitious "Panchamrit" pledge made at COP26. With 250 GW already operational, the nation is halfway toward its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. This transition is not only reducing carbon emissions but also enhancing national energy security by lowering the reliance on imported coal and gas.

For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, these figures are critical for "Environment and Ecology" and "Geography of India" segments, reflecting the country's shift toward a resilient and low-carbon economy.
