Hindi Journalism Day is observed on 30 May each year to mark the beginning of Hindi journalism in India. On 30 May 1826, Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla started Udant Martand ("The Rising Sun"), India's first Hindi newspaper, from Calcutta (now Kolkata). The year 2026 therefore marks 200 years of Hindi journalism. The day acknowledges the role Hindi newspapers have played in spreading public awareness, strengthening democracy and widening access to information in Indian languages.
