Hindi Diwas on 14 September recalls the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union under Article 343. It has been observed every year since 1953. Article 351 directs the promotion of Hindi as a medium of expression for India's composite culture. The Constitution declares no national language, and English continues in official use under the Official Languages Act, 1963. World Hindi Day, on 10 January, is linked to the First World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur in 1975.
