High Court of Kerala name to stay unchanged despite State's renaming as Keralam

Save
The name 'High Court of Kerala' will remain even though the State has become Keralam. A High Court's name can be changed only through a High Court Name Amendment Act passed by Parliament, on the State executive's recommendation and after taking the State judiciary's views. The judiciary is independent of the State government, as shown by the High Courts of Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Orissa, which kept their original names; 2016 bills to rename the Madras and Bombay High Courts lapsed. The Kerala High Court was set up on November 1, 1956, at Ernakulam under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956.
