Gujarat has passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, becoming the second state after Uttarakhand to adopt a common civil law for all communities. The law governs marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, with compulsory registration. Polygamy is banned, and fraudulent or forced marriages attract imprisonment and fines. Live-in relationships must be registered; women get maintenance rights and children are treated as legitimate. Scheduled Tribes are exempted. The Bill was drafted on the recommendations of a committee led by Ranjana Desai. UCC is mentioned in Article 44 of the Directive Principles.
