Grassroots Biodiversity Project Launched in Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya

Community-Led Conservation: The Grassroots Biodiversity Project

The Government of India has launched a significant biodiversity conservation initiative targeting local governance and community participation in Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya. This project is a collaborative effort led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).

Funding and Global Partnerships

  • Budget: The project is backed by a $4.88 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

  • Timeline: The implementation period is set from 2025 to 2030.

Targeted Landscapes

  • Tamil Nadu: The project focuses on the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (Erode) and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (Nilgiris).

  • Meghalaya: It covers the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve in the West Garo Hills district.

Key Objectives

The project aims to empower local Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), promote sustainable funding through Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), and integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds into conservation. For TNPSC and Civil Services aspirants, this is a vital update under "Biodiversity Conservation" and "Governance," highlighting the role of indigenous communities in protecting critical habitats.
