The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has notified four ports as mega ports under the Indian Ports Act, 2025: Deendayal Port (Kandla) and Mundra Port in Gujarat, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Maharashtra, and Paradip Port in Odisha. A port qualifies if it handles 150 million metric tonnes of bulk cargo or 7.5 million TEUs of container cargo in a financial year. The status does not alter a port's major or non-major classification; Mundra is the only one previously non-major. Mega-port status lasts five years before re-evaluation.
