Four Indian cultural heritage sites have been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, raising India's total to 73. They are the Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble in Assam, the Colonial Penal Settlement in the Andaman Islands, Nicobarese Cultural Continuity in the Nicobar Islands and the Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati in Rajasthan. Sivasagar served as the capital of the Ahom Kingdom, while Shekhawati is famed for frescoes on its havelis. A site must stay on the Tentative List for at least a year before it can be nominated for World Heritage inscription.
