The Lok Sabha has passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, which amends the 2019 Act. The Bill alters the process of identity recognition: certification will be issued by the District Magistrate on the recommendation of a medical board. After receiving the identity certificate, a transgender person may change their name in official documents.
