Extreme Heat and Agriculture Report 2026: 1 Billion Livelihoods at Risk
The Thermal Safety Margin: A Growing Threat to Global Food Security
In a joint effort to mark Earth Day (April 22, 2026), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a landmark report titled โExtreme Heat and Agriculture.โ The study provides a chilling forecast on how rising temperatures are eroding the productivity of the global agricultural sector.
Impact on Farm Workers and Productivity
- Worker Safety: By the end of the century, extreme heat could make outdoor farm work unsafe for up to 250 days a year. Farm workers are already 35 times more likely to die from heat exposure than the general population.
- Labor Loss: Approximately 470 billion working hours are lost annually due to heat stress.
- Crop Yields: For every $1^circ C$ increase in global temperature, crop yields are estimated to decline by up to 7.5%.
Vulnerability of the Indo-Gangetic Plain
The report specifically identifies the Indo-Gangetic Plain as a high-risk zone, putting the livelihoods of nearly 1 billion people in jeopardy. It also introduces the concept of "flash droughts"โsudden, intense dry spellsโwhich rapidly deplete soil moisture and worsen agricultural stress. For TNPSC and Geography aspirants, this is a vital update under "Environment - Climate Change" and "Agriculture," linking human safety with food security.
