Energy Statistics India 2026: Renewable Potential Surges and Efficiency Improves

Energy Statistics India 2026: A Comprehensive Overview of India’s Power Sector

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has officially released its 33rd annual publication, “Energy Statistics India 2026.” This report provides an integrated dataset reflecting India’s journey toward energy security, detailing reserves, production, and consumption patterns across coal, petroleum, natural gas, and renewables.

Growth in Primary Energy Supply

India’s Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) witnessed a steady growth of 2.95%, reaching a significant 9,32,816 KToe in FY 2024–25. While coal remains the dominant energy source, the transition toward cleaner alternatives is gaining rapid momentum.

The Renewable Energy Revolution

One of the most striking highlights of the report is the massive leap in renewable potential and capacity:

  • Unprecedented Potential: India’s total renewable energy potential has reached 47,04,043 Megawatt.
  • Solar Dominance: Solar energy accounts for the lion's share of this potential at approximately 71% (33.43 lakh MW).
  • Installed Capacity: The installed renewable capacity has surged to 2,29,346 Megawatt in 2025, showing a consistent double-digit growth rate over the past decade.

Efficiency and Consumption Trends

The report underscores significant improvements in infrastructure and consumer habits:

  • Reduced Losses: Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses, which were around 22% in 2015-16, have been successfully reduced to 17% in FY 2024-25.
  • Rising Demand: Per capita energy consumption has increased from 15,296 Megajoules to 18,096 Megajoules, while Total Final Consumption (TFC) grew by over 30% during this period.

Surge in Sectoral Investment

Reflecting India’s commitment to its Net-Zero goals by 2070, credit flow to the energy sector (specifically renewables) has seen a sixfold increase—rising from β‚Ή1,688 crore in 2021 to a massive β‚Ή10,325 crore in 2025.

For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, these statistics are vital for understanding India's energy policy, climate goals, and industrial development trends in 2026.
