The Government of India has notified the Electricity (Amendment) Rules, 2026, which revise the provisions governing Captive Generating Plants (CGPs). CGPs are power plants that industries build mainly to produce electricity for their own consumption. The amendment removes legal ambiguity by clarifying ownership norms, including how subsidiaries and holding companies are treated. It also makes verification of captive status an annual exercise and provides for designated nodal agencies at the State and Union Territory level, with effect from 1 April 2026.
