The Government of India has made it compulsory to sell petrol blended with 20% ethanol, with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95, across the country from April 1, 2026. India had already achieved 10% ethanol blending in 2022 and brought forward its 20% blending target to 2025-26. Higher ethanol blending reduces crude oil imports and supports farmers who supply feedstock for ethanol production.
