e-SafeHER: Empowering Rural Women with Cyber Security Awareness

e-SafeHER Initiative: Securing the Digital Journey of Rural Women

In a significant move to bridge the digital gender gap and ensure online safety, the Government of India has launched the e-SafeHER Cyber Security Awareness Programme. This initiative is specifically designed to protect and empower rural women as they navigate the increasingly complex digital ecosystem.

Training One Million 'Cyber Sakhis'

The programme is a collaborative effort under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It falls under the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) programme and is implemented by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) in partnership with the Reliance Foundation. Key objectives include:

  • Target Reach: Training one million women over the next three years to safely use digital tools and services.

  • Cyber Sakhis: The initiative will identify and train local leaders as "Cyber Sakhis" (Cyber Friends) who will serve as community educators and first responders for digital safety.

  • Community-Led Growth: Using a community-based approach through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to ensure last-mile digital literacy and awareness.

Phased Implementation and Core Focus

The programme will initially roll out in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, with plans to expand nationwide in phases. The curriculum focuses on essential digital hygiene, including safe digital transactions, recognizing cyber risks like phishing and identity theft, and promoting overall digital inclusion for women.

For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, e-SafeHER is a vital topic under "Science & Technology" and "Social Issues," reflecting India’s commitment to building a secure and inclusive Digital India.
