Universal Blood Access: One Blood Centre per District by December 2026

District-Level Blood Centres: Bridging the Gap in India’s Health Infrastructure

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has set a critical deadline to establish at least one functional blood centre in every district across India by December 2026. This initiative is part of a broader mission to decentralize life-saving healthcare services and ensure that no patient has to travel long distances for blood transfusions.

Addressing the Infrastructure Gaps

Recent reviews indicate that approximately 10% of districts in the country still lack a dedicated blood centre. To address this, the government is focusing on a comprehensive audit of existing facilities, covering:

  • Licensing and Compliance: Ensuring all centres meet the stringent safety standards.

  • TTI Testing: Implementing zero-tolerance for Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (TTIs) through advanced screening protocols.

  • Storage and Logistics: Upgrading cold-chain facilities to minimize wastage of blood and its components.

Digital Transformation: eRaktKosh and BBMS

A key hurdle identified is the incomplete implementation of digital platforms. The ministry is fast-tracking the integration of eRaktKosh and the Blood Bank Management System (BBMS). These tools are designed to provide real-time updates on blood availability, streamline reporting, and connect donors with recipients efficiently across the national grid.

Focus on Voluntary Donation

The policy emphasizes a shift from replacement donation to 100% voluntary blood donation. By strengthening district-level infrastructure, the government aims to foster a culture of regular donation at the community level, ensuring a safe and sustainable blood supply for emergencies, surgeries, and chronic conditions like Thalassemia.

For TNPSC and D.Pharm aspirants, this topic is essential under "Public Health" and "Healthcare Administration," reflecting the government's commitment to the 'Health for All' vision.
