Introduction
To secure domestic supply chains for electric vehicle batteries and advanced semiconductor manufacturing, the Government of Andhra Pradesh on 18 August 2026 signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, for extensive multi-parametric geophysical exploration of strategic Lithium and Gallium mineral deposits in the Vempalle area of the Proterozoic Kadapa Basin.
Geological Significance & Mineral Concentrations
The exploration program targets high-value critical minerals essential for national clean energy transition:
- Promising Mineral Concentrations: Preliminary geological surveys estimated strategic Lithium concentrations as high as 1,000 parts per million (ppm) and Gallium levels up to 250 ppm embedded in the dolomitic and clay-rich sedimentary strata of the Vempalle Formation.
- High-Tech Strategic Applications: Lithium forms the indispensable chemistry for EV lithium-ion batteries and grid BESS, while Gallium is vital for Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) power semiconductors, high-frequency 5G/6G chips, and defence radar systems.
- Geology of Kadapa Basin: The crescent-shaped Cuddapah Basin is one of India's most mineral-rich Proterozoic sedimentary formations, hosting major uranium, barytes, limestone, and critical mineral resources.
- CSIR-NGRI Research Capabilities: Established in 1961 in Hyderabad under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), NGRI provides advanced magnetotelluric, gravity, and seismic deep-crustal mapping.
