State-run Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has delivered Mangrol, the third of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). Named after the coastal town of Mangrol in Gujarat's Junagadh district, it is built to detect, track and engage submarines in shallow, acoustically cluttered coastal waters, freeing destroyers and frigates for blue-water roles. It can operate up to 200 nautical miles from the coast, reach 25 knots and stay out for two weeks. The ASW-SWC programme replaces four Soviet-origin Abhay-class corvettes and strengthens coastal defence amid rising Chinese underwater activity in the Indian Ocean Region.
