Centre defers Census operations in Manipur amid demands to update NRC with 1951 base year

Save
The Centre has deferred Census operations in Manipur. Meiteis, Pangals (Meitei Muslims) and Nagas demanded that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated first with 1951 as the base year, and petitions in the Manipur High Court also raised concerns over illegal migration from Myanmar; the Kuki-Zo Council rejected the NRC demand. The NRC arose from the 1951 Census but was compiled only in Assam. The Census is conducted under the Census Act, 1948, is in the Union List of the Seventh Schedule, and is run by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
