Bihar has been declared free of Naxalism following the surrender of the last armed Maoist in the State. The Union government has fixed 31 March 2026 as the deadline for wiping out Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India. LWE, also known as Naxalism or Maoism, traces its origin to the 1967 Naxalbari movement in West Bengal. It later spread across the so-called Red Corridor, affecting Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
