Bhagwat Prasad Makwana has been named Chairperson and Kaishab Bihari Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK). The NCSK was set up on 12 August 1994 under the NCSK Act, 1993, and turned into a non-statutory body after the Act lapsed in 2004. Functioning under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, it works for the welfare, dignity and rehabilitation of sanitation workers and manual scavengers, and monitors the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. The present 10th Commission's tenure runs to 31 March 2028.
