Strengthening the Blue Economy: Indigenization Drive Expands Underwater Combat and Torpedo Infrastructure

In a significant boost to India's maritime defense footprint, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for Bharat Dynamics Limited’s (BDL) state-of-the-art Naval Systems Manufacturing Unit at T. Sirasapalli village within the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh. Representing an aggregate capital investment of ₹480 crore, the strategic installation expands local capability to support the Indian Navy's underwater operations and secure critical shipping lanes across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The Infrastructure Blueprint and Local Economic Multipliers

The sprawling 160-acre specialized complex introduces highly restricted manufacturing lines designed to eliminate long-standing import pipelines:

  • Strategic Production Capabilities: The plant is engineered to build next-generation **Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), advanced torpedo decoy setups (such as the C-303 matrix), heavy-weight torpedo variants (Varunastra), light-weight anti-submarine torpedoes (TAL)**, and specialized sea mines.
  • Advanced Acoustic Testbeds: The structural layout houses heavy explosive integration blocks and advanced **underwater acoustic tank testing facilities**, enabling engineers to calibrate sonar arrays and acoustic homing heads locally.
  • Employment and Cluster Growth: The project will generate approximately 500 direct and 2,000 indirect employment opportunities. It will also support an ecosystem of local MSMEs and engineering vendors, establishing the Visakhapatnam-Anakapalli belt as an elite naval electronics manufacturing cluster working with adjacent DRDO labs like the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL).

For TNPSC and Industrial Geography students, this infrastructure expansion represents a critical case study under 'Defensive Corridors, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and Strategic Coastal Engineering'.
