The government shifted the base year of India's merchandise trade indices from 2012-13 to 2022-23. The revision, carried out by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) on the advice of a committee chaired by Professor Nachiketa Chattopadhyay of the Indian Statistical Institute, captures changes in commodity mix, export diversification and new trading partners. The new series uses updated commodity coverage, weights based on 2022-23 trade values, alignment with international classifications and wider terms-of-trade measures (gross, net and income).
