The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) carried out a site assessment for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from September 4 to 8, 2026, covering all three districts: North & Middle Andaman, South Andaman and Nicobar. The reactors are being considered to meet growing power needs of the Great Nicobar Project, including the International Container Transhipment Terminal, a greenfield airport and related infrastructure. The islands now rely mostly on diesel power. Great Nicobar is strategically placed near the Strait of Malacca and key sea lanes.
