Assam's Mising Tribe Highlighted for Traditional Flood Adaptation on Indigenous Peoples' Day

Save

The Mising, Assam's second-largest plains tribe, drew attention on the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (9 August) for their age-old ways of coping with floods. They live mainly along the Brahmaputra and its tributaries in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Jorhat and Sonitpur districts. Their Chang Ghar homes stand on bamboo stilts, keeping living areas above floodwater. Livelihoods include paddy farming, livestock, fishing and handloom weaving using bamboo and thatch. The community celebrates Ali-Aye-Ligang, its sowing festival, and traditionally follows Donyi-Poloism, a faith linked to the Sun and Moon.
