The Assam Rifles plans to add the indigenous Tangkhul Hui and Kombai breeds to its dog squad and phase out foreign breeds by 2050, following a 2025 Home Ministry directive to promote Indian breeds. The Kombai, native to Tamil Nadu, is considered well suited for guarding and tracking, while the Tangkhul Hui from Manipur's Ukhrul district is valued for disease resistance and hunting skill. The force, raised in 1835 as India's oldest paramilitary, now has 253 dogs against a sanctioned 344.
