ASI Begins Large-Scale Excavation at Historic Balirajgarh Site in Bihar

Balirajgarh: Uncovering the Ancient Mithila Civilization

In March 2026, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Patna Circle officially commenced a large-scale scientific excavation at Balirajgarh in the Madhubani district of Bihar. The primary objective is to reach the 'virgin soil' to determine the earliest human habitation layers and explore the site's potential links to the ancient Videha Kingdom.

Historical and Archaeological Significance

  • Location: Situated in the Babubarhi block, the site is locally known as Raja Bali Ka Garh and is traditionally believed to be the capital of the legendary King Bali.

  • Chronology: Previous explorations revealed cultural remains spanning the Sunga, Kushan, Gupta, and Pala periods, showing a continuity from the 2nd century BCE to the early medieval era.

  • Fortification: The site features massive brick fortifications spread over approximately 176 acres, making it one of the largest ancient urban settlements in the region.

  • Protected Status: It was declared a protected monument of national importance in 1938 under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1904.

Connecting Myths with History

Historians believe Balirajgarh was an administrative hub of Mithila, the capital of the Iron Age Videha tribe mentioned in Janapada history. For TNPSC and History aspirants, this excavation is a key update in "Ancient Indian Culture and History," potentially revealing new insights into Northern India's urban evolution.
