Introduction

To secure domestic supply chains for electric vehicle batteries and advanced semiconductor manufacturing, the Government of Andhra Pradesh on 18 August 2026 signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, for extensive multi-parametric geophysical exploration of strategic Lithium and Gallium mineral deposits in the Vempalle area of the Proterozoic Kadapa Basin.

Geological Significance & Mineral Concentrations

The exploration program targets high-value critical minerals essential for national clean energy transition:

  • Promising Mineral Concentrations: Preliminary geological surveys estimated strategic Lithium concentrations as high as 1,000 parts per million (ppm) and Gallium levels up to 250 ppm embedded in the dolomitic and clay-rich sedimentary strata of the Vempalle Formation.
  • High-Tech Strategic Applications: Lithium forms the indispensable chemistry for EV lithium-ion batteries and grid BESS, while Gallium is vital for Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) power semiconductors, high-frequency 5G/6G chips, and defence radar systems.
  • Geology of Kadapa Basin: The crescent-shaped Cuddapah Basin is one of India's most mineral-rich Proterozoic sedimentary formations, hosting major uranium, barytes, limestone, and critical mineral resources.
  • CSIR-NGRI Research Capabilities: Established in 1961 in Hyderabad under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), NGRI provides advanced magnetotelluric, gravity, and seismic deep-crustal mapping.

Key Facts

  • Agreement: MoU for Lithium and Gallium Exploration in Kadapa Basin
  • Signatories: Government of Andhra Pradesh & CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI)
  • Geological Zone: Vempalle Formation, Kadapa Basin (Cuddapah Basin), Andhra Pradesh
  • Estimated Grades: Lithium up to 1,000 ppm & Gallium up to 250 ppm
  • Critical Mineral Applications: Lithium (EV Batteries/BESS) & Gallium (GaN Semiconductors/Radar)
  • Scientific Partner: CSIR-NGRI, Hyderabad (Established 1961)

Exam Perspective

For TNPSC and UPSC examinations, this topic covers Critical Minerals Strategy, Lithium & Gallium Resources, Cuddapah Basin Geology, CSIR-NGRI, Semiconductor Manufacturing (India Semiconductor Mission), and EV Supply Chains in GS Paper I and GS Paper III.

Conclusion

The AP-NGRI critical mineral exploration in the Kadapa Basin accelerates India's National Critical Minerals Mission, reducing import vulnerabilities in clean mobility and semiconductor chip fabrication.
