Ancient petroglyphs have been found near the Beerappa Temple in Telangana, adding to India's record of prehistoric art. Petroglyphs are images made by removing the outer layer of a rock surface with harder tools, through methods such as pecking, incising, abrading, drilling, polishing and scratching. The word comes from the Greek 'petros' (stone) and 'glyphein' (to carve). They occur on every continent except Antarctica; the Edakkal Caves are a well-known Indian example.
