India observed the 50th Civil Accounts Day on 1 March 2026, marking the Foundation Day of the Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS).
- ICAS was created in 1976 under the Ministry of Finance when the audit and accounting functions of the Union Government were separated.
- The change was brought in through the Comptroller and Auditor General (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Service) Amendment Act, 1976 and the Departmentalisation of Union Accounts Ordinance, 1976.
- The Public Financial Management System (PFMS), built by the Office of the Controller General of Accounts, is the core IT platform for government payments, receipts and accounts. It began in 2009 as the Central Plan Schemes Monitoring System and later expanded to Direct Benefit Transfer.
