With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz disrupted by the Iran-Israel conflict, India is diversifying its energy basket and now sources crude oil from about 40 countries. Around 60% of India's crude imports arrive through alternate routes. India imported nearly 300 million metric tonnes of crude oil and petroleum products in 2024-25 and depends on imports for about 88% of its crude needs and 51% of its gas demand. India has also signed a $3 billion Liquefied Natural Gas deal with the UAE. Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited maintains reserves at Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru and Padur (Udupi, Karnataka).
