National Service Scheme (NSS) Day is observed on 24 September to mark the founding of the NSS in India. The scheme was launched on 24 September 1969 by Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, then Union Education Minister, coinciding with the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1969). The NSS functions under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and its motto is "Not Me But You." Through community service, it helps students build teamwork, leadership and a sense of social responsibility.
