Indian runner Sawan Barwal set a new national marathon record at the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands, finishing the race in 2 hours 11 minutes 58 seconds. In doing so he broke India's oldest marathon record, the 2:12:00 mark set by Shivnath Singh in 1978. The record had stood for nearly five decades, making Barwal's run a landmark in Indian long-distance running.
