From 8 October 2026, the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Act, 2026 is in force after the Ministry of Home Affairs notified it, though its constitutional validity is being contested in the Supreme Court. The law governs cadre management and how Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are sent on deputation to senior CAPF posts. On 23 May 2025 the Supreme Court granted CAPF Group A officers Organised Services status, ordered a gradual cut in IPS deputation to senior posts within two years, and sought a cadre and service-rules review within six months. Petitions against the Act and related contempt cases were listed for 15 October 2026.
