The World Bank released the World Development Report 2026: The Promise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting AI's potential to reduce inequality in developing countries.
It says generative AI could raise productivity in over 16% of existing jobs in developing economies, while automation risk is higher in high-income countries (14.2%) than in low- and middle-income ones (4.5%). To benefit, developing countries need reliable electricity, internet access, data systems, skills and strong institutions. AI can help healthcare, agriculture, business and government services.
