The Union government has notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 to widen the use of natural gas. India aims to raise gas's share in its energy mix from about 6.2% in 2025 to 15% by 2030. Consumption is projected to grow from 52 MTPA in FY25 to 112 MTPA by FY40. Natural gas, mainly methane, cuts particulate matter, NOx and SOx emissions. Related initiatives include City Gas Distribution (CGD), Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) and the Unified Tariff (UFT) policy.
