Celebrated on 13 February, National Women's Day pays tribute to Sarojini Naidu, who was born in Hyderabad on that date in 1879. Remembered as the 'Nightingale of India', she was a poet, a freedom fighter and a political leader. In 1925 she became the first Indian woman to serve as President of the Indian National Congress, and in 1947 she was appointed the first woman Governor of the United Provinces, today's Uttar Pradesh. The occasion is used to encourage women's empowerment, gender equality, education and leadership.
