National Safe Motherhood Day is observed in India on April 11 every year, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi. The observance was proposed by the White Ribbon Alliance India and declared by the Government of India in 2003. Its purpose is to cut maternal and infant deaths by widening access to healthcare and spreading awareness. The day highlights safe pregnancy, skilled care during childbirth, and antenatal (before birth) and postnatal (after birth) services. The theme for 2026 is “Equity in Maternal Healthcare: Leaving No Mother Behind.”
